NKT has finalized the commissioning of the 220 kV HVAC cable systems for the offshore wind park Walney Extension in the Irish Sea. When fully operational later this year, Walney Extension will become the world’s largest wind farm contributing a significant amount of green electricity to the UK’s energy mix.

NKT has designed, manufactured and commissioned the two 220kV extruded export cable systems as well as an underground cable system connecting the wind farm to the onshore power grid. All 220kV joints and terminations were also supplied and installed by NKT.

"We are proud to be part of the ambitious project generating renewable energy in UK and we have seen great collaboration with Ørsted and other suppliers to the Walney Extension. In NKT, we are committed to the sustainable development of the global energy production, and this project reinforces our position as a leading provider of advanced high-voltage cable solutions connecting offshore wind parks to the power grid," says Executive Vice President Andreas Berthou, who is responsible for high-voltage cable solutions in NKT.

With the Walney Extension, NKT underlines the company’s strong position in the global offshore wind market with extensive experience in the UK where NKT has supplied cables for projects such as Galloper Wind Farm, Hornsea One and the newly opened Race Bank Wind Farm.

17 Jan | ACCIONA completely renovated wind farm service Spain

  • El Cabrito, located at Tarifa (Cadiz), goes from ninety 330-kW wind turbines installed in 1995 to twelve 3-MW and 1.5-MW machines of Nordex technology
  • The installation will produce 16% more clean energy with the same capacity (30 MW) as the obsolete wind farm
  • The renewal has reduced its environmental impact, as well as its visual and noise profile, and makes it easier for birdlife to fly through.
